To say music is not permitted in Islam is an understatement. Even singing is completely forbidden and a spiritual crime.
Qu’ran verses are interpreted in this manner:
There are certain human beings who purchase an enchanting diversion [i.e. music] in order to lead people away from the way of Allah without having any knowledge, who hold the call to the Way of Allah to ridicule. A humiliating chastisement awaits them. When Our verses are recited to such a person, he arrogantly turns away, as though he had not heard them, or as though there was a deafness in his ears. So announce to him the tidings of a grievous chastisement.
Qu’ran 31:6
The hadiths are unanimous on this issue:
Narrated Abu ‘Amir or Abu Malik Al-Ash’ari: that he heard the prophet saying, “From among my followers there will be some people who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, as lawful. And there will be some people who will stay near the side of a mountain and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, ‘Return to us tomorrow.’ Allah will destroy them during the night and will let the mountain fall on them, and he will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection.”
Hadith 494B, Book 49, Volume 7, Sahih Bukhari, Muhammad al-Bukhari
‘A’isha reported: The Messenger of Allah (way peace be upon him) came (in my apartment) while there were two girls with me singing the song of the Battle of Bu’ath. He lay down on the bed and turned away his face. Then came Abu Bakr and he scolded me and said: Oh! this musical instrument of the devil in the house of the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him)! The Messenger of Allah turned towards him and said: Leave them alone. And when he became unattentive, I hinted them and they went out, and it was the day of ‘Id and negroes were playing with shields and spears. (I do not remember) whether I asked the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) or whether he said to me if I desired to see (that sport). I said: Yes. I stood behind him with his face parallel to my face, and he said: O Banu Arfada, be busy (in your sports) till I was satiated. He said (to me): Is that enough? I said: Yes. Upon this he asked me to go.

Narrated Umm Habibah: The prophet said: The angels do not go with a travelling company in which there is a bell.
Hadith 2548, Book 14, Sunan Abu Dawud
Narrated Umar ibn al-Khattab: Ibn az-Zubayr told that a woman client of theirs took az-Zubayr’s daughter to Umar ibn al-Khattab wearing bells on her legs. Umar cut them off and said that he had heard the apostle of Allah say: There is a devil along with each bell.
Hadith 4218, Book 34, Sunan Abu Dawud
By Allah, even listening to singing (or a musical instrument) is a grave danger for one’s religious commitment, there is no way to block it except by not listening to it.
Hadith 567, Book 11, Majmu’ Al Fatawa, Ibn Taymiyya
However, there seems to be a strange exception where music is permissible by either foreigners or slaves during Eid:
Narrated Aisha: Allah’s Apostle came to my house while two girls were singing beside me the songs of Buath (a story about the war between the two tribes of the Ansar, the Khazraj and the Aus, before Islam). The prophet lay down and turned his face to the other side. Then Abu Bakr came and spoke to me harshly saying, “Musical instruments of Satan near the Prophet?” Allah’s apostle turned his face towards him and said, “Leave them.” When Abu Bakr became inattentive, I signalled to those girls to go out and they left. It was the day of Eid, and the black people were playing with shields and spears; so either I requested the Prophet or he asked me whether I would like to see the display. I replied in the affirmative. Then the prophet made me stand behind him and my cheek was touching his cheek and he was saying, “Carry on! O Bani Arfida,” until I got tired. The prophet asked me, “Are you satisfied?” I replied in the affirmative and he told me to leave.
Hadith 70, Book 14, Volume 2, Sahih Bukhari, Muhammad al-Bukhari
Narrated Aisha: Abu Bakr came to my house while two small Ansari girls were singing beside me the stories of the Ansar concerning the Day of Buath. And they were not singers. Abu Bakr said protestingly, “Musical instruments of Satan in the house of Allah’s Apostle !” It happened on the Eid day and Allah’s Apostle said, “O Abu Bakr! There is an Eid for every nation and this is our Eid.”
Hadith 70, Book 15, Volume 2, Sahih Bukhari, Muhammad al-Bukhari
Narrated ‘Urwa on the authority of ‘Aisha: On the days of Mina, (11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhul-Hijjah) Abu Bakr came to her while two young girls were beating the tambourine and the prophet was lying covered with his clothes. Abu Bakr scolded them and the prophet uncovered his face and said to Abu Bakr, “Leave them, for these days are the days of Eid and the days of Mina.” ‘Aisha further said, “Once the Prophet was screening me and I was watching the display of black slaves in the Mosque and (‘Umar) scolded them. The Prophet said, ‘Leave them. O Bani Arfida! Carry on, you are protected.”
Hadith 103, Book 15, Volume 2, Sahih Bukhari, Muhammad al-Bukhari
Narrated Aisha: That once Abu Bakr came to her on the day of Eid al-Fitr or Eid al-Adha while the prophet was with her and there were two girl singers with her, singing songs of the Ansar about the day of Buath. Abu Bakr said twice. “Musical instrument of Satan!” But the Prophet said, “Leave them Abu Bakr, for every nation has an Eid (i.e. festival) and this day is our Eid.”
Hadith 268, Book 58, Volume 5, Sahih Bukhari, Muhammad al-Bukhari
Once more, this directly comes from Judaism itself. We see this in the Shulchan Arukh which is the most widely consulted legal code or halakha in Judaism, where singing in most cases is expressly forbidden due to the ‘catastrophe’ of the jewish temple being obliterated:
The real reason for Islam’s hostility to music seeps out, revealing it to just be another tool in the enemy’s arsenal. We note there are certainly other practical aspects to this.
Prohibition of vibration should never come as a shock to us. We know that serious spiritual power consists in vibration and in speech, a power which some would prefer remaining in a hands of a filthy few. Music also has an extremely potent effect upon the mind and soul.
Music is natural to all kinds of people, even in tribes where primitive peoples sing in unison and play instruments. A total ban on music is an absolute absurdity. It is important to note for the reader that the enemy programs are clearly and blatantly hostile to existence altogether at their core.
As with art, music can be strongly indicative of the health of a civilization. Beyond all anti-civilization smut disguised as ‘music’, our Gods are perennial patrons of music as an art form, whether traditional or modern. They stand in clear OPPOSITION to this alien chicanery.
Christianity also forbade most forms of music in church itself outside of choral singing for contemplation up until the 14th century. The church fathers condemned it as smut and filth serving to detract from contemplation of the Christian ‘God’.
Even the pipe organ, now synonymous with churches, was blasted as ‘demonic’ for its popularity in secular fetes and only introduced progressively to churches after one Pope apparently took a liking to it, hampered by the Carolingian Reforms and Second Council of Lyon that only encouraged permitted chant.
Refined music existed in a state of ambiguity to some extent or another. Polyphony, even in vocal chant, was opposed commonly. Ultra-Christian fanatics such as Savonarola up until the 15th century orchestrated the massive-scale burning of instruments.
However, around the time of the Renaissance and the Reformation, the church had to co-opt other forms of instrumental music to regain followers. The kings of European monarchies and the church increasingly sponsored and patronized musicians to create works for them. In addition, the class of castrated singers became exceptionally popular in liturgical choirs and at religious events such as children’s funerals. This was the genesis of the Classical form of music.
Music developed in a precarious, subtle way in the Islamic world in comparison to the Christian, often impeded by the extreme destruction and persecution of musicians by Muslim rulers and fanatical ulema. Many Muslims clung to the margins of poetry which was more accepted by Arabs.
Musicians often gained tremendous popularity and influence in earlier Muslim societies. Schools of music with differing tendencies operated depending on the will of a ruler. Regardless, the hostility of the hadiths generated around this time shows they were a marked and targeted people.
Many musicians were also trained slaves. As they were slaves, they could operate within an extra-Islamic framework, where they were allowed to compose what was ‘forbidden’ to believers and what believers heard was not as ‘forbidden’ coming from a slave. As with many things in Islam, this paradoxical, vicarious state of affairs continued for centuries.
Yet as slaves, they were necessarily forced to ‘pay to play’ and suffer certain indignities attached to the position of being both slave and musician. This was not the happy-go-lucky and exotic existence that many modern historians and artists portraying naked women with tambourines try to portray it as.
Islamic prohibitions against music always existed and continue to exist as long as this program runs rampant.
The punishments meted out in the Islamic State in the mid 2010s give us a clue:
Songs and music are forbidden in Islam, as they prevent one from the remembrance of God and the Qu’ran and are a temptation and corruption of the heart. Whoever violates these rules will subject themselves to the necessary Sharia punishment.
Islamic State fatwa
Likewise Taliban-ruled Afghanistan:
Promoting music causes moral corruption and playing it will cause the youth to go astray.
Ministry for the Propagation of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice, Taliban
Al-Mansur led prohibitions of music in the late 900s in Islamic Spain. None of this is much different to the kinds of hostility aroused in 12th century Islamic Morocco and Spain under Ibn Tumart where instruments were smashed en masse by networks of police under the Almohads:
When the Almoravid Berber hordes from the Maghrib suppressed the “Party Kings,” music came to be looked upon as one of the “wiles of Satan,” although the older Muslim inhabitants took little heed of such rebukes.
Their successors, the Almohades, under the fiat of ibn Tumart (d. 524/1130), made decrees against music more stringent, even to the destruction of instruments. Yet there were many who opposed these fanatical legists, including ibn Quzman (d. 555/1160), the song-writer par excellence, who chided with puritans saying, “The faqih cries ‘Repent’; but how can one be contrite with the air so fragrant, the birds warbling, the flowers perfuming, and music (ghina) from a clever reed-piper (zamir) and a heavenly voice?”
Book 5, Volume 2, A History of Muslim Philosophy
Ibn Al-Qayyim’s treatises against music gained much popularity and presence in the Islamic world:
Never do the love of song and the love of Qur’an come together in a person’s heart except that one expels the other.
Ibn Al-Qayyim
So did the Dhamm al-Malali by Ibn Abi al-Dunya, which translates to ‘Censoring the Instruments of Diversion’. This tract attempted to claim all sounds made by music were a reprehensible diversion from the Islamic life of ‘piety’.
In most of these tracts, hadiths and other rambling pieces of smut, Satan is always seen as the hidden hand to conspire to lure the Muslims to music. It is very true Satan proudly stands for music. It is His gift to humanity above all others. Music enables relaxation of the analytical side of the mind and brain, permitting creation and newer ideas to spring forth. It should not be a shock to any cultured human that Islam despises new ideas. Muslims are essentially made into clones.
While western historians wax lovingly about the prevalence of music in Islamic Spain compared to the ‘barbarism’ in the rest of Europe, Islam’s current hostility to musicians is so great that the major Muslim sites blame musical celebrities such as Ziryab of that era for the destruction of Islamic Spain altogether:
Surely there are other sins which caused the collapse of Islam in Spain, but music held vital role to distance the muslims from their religion. They didn’t know which is tawheed [giving Allah alone all attention] and which is shirk since they didn’t study their religious matters anymore. They also didn’t know the correct ritual of worship, and so on.
Now, is it true that music causes people to neglect remembering Allah, the Qur’an, hadith, and study their religion? Let’s answer with our daily activities, which, between the Qur’an or hadith and singing that we hear and memorize most?
Many people laugh, feeling creeped, are touched, even cry when they listen to music, but only little among them feel the same when they listen to the Qur’an.
Geniuses we are dealing with here. His question is a self-answering one. NO SHIT people instinctively are better listening to music than that GARBAGE! That is the only reason music keeps resurfacing among the Islamic ‘deen’ over and over again to begin with.
The rhythm of life itself is incompatible with this ape-like creed. It needs to be enforced through paranoia, deviancy and resentment for it to have the same hold of a single beautiful song. Destroying music out of envy shows how wafer-thin Islam really is.
Nonetheless, one may already know so-called ‘nasheeds’, vocal songs exalting terrorism and other facets of virtue in Islam, are paradoxically permitted by the Islamic State and other fundamentalists, even though these often borrow melodies from secular music.
Once again, in analogy to its ‘position’ on videos and photography, Islam contradicts itself ceaselessly. Rather than even a cult, we can define it instead as a mental illness, properly speaking.
One 15 year old boy in Islamic State occupied territory was abducted and beheaded on an accusation of listening to pop music.
To the western people who advertise Islam and its ‘virtues’, we ask what is wrong with you?
Defending the right to create is an absolute must. Any musician who tolerates this filth is living in a dream world. There are no excuses these days for this type of stupidity. In line with individual development, the celestial chorus must reign supreme over the shrieking of ape-like peoples.
